On-going crashes with the UpSlide add-in, such as the ribbon not being available in Office applications or errors like The method or operation is not implemented, can be caused by Microsoft Defender blocking UpSlide's auto-update and corrupting the installation.
UpSlide's auto-update feature requires running executable content. This action is blocked by the antivirus (Defender ATP), preventing UpSlide from updating itself to a newer version and corrupting the current one. The below ATP Attack Surface Reduction rules cause the issue:
- Block Office applications from creating executable content.
- Block Office applications from creating child processes.
If your users are impacted and UpSlide is not loading anymore, you can follow the steps below to cancel the update:
close all office apps
open the %ProgramData%\Upslide folder in a file explorer
rename the folder Binaries to Old_Binaries
rename the folder OldBinaries to Binaries
start an Office application, UpSlide should now load as expected
The rules above need to be disabled either completely or for the specific UpSlide installation folder. The default installation folder is C:\ProgramData\UpSlide but it should be confirmed whether your organization install to a custom location before going forward with the procedure below.
To set the exclusion open the Microsoft Endpoint Manager admin center:
- Select Devices
- Configuration profiles
- Create profile
Within the create a profile window, select:
- Windows 10 and later
- Device restrictions
On the Microsoft Defender Antivirus tab, add exclusions for the rules above either globally or to the installation folder (default folder is C:\ProgramData\UpSlide)
Checking the exclusion is applied
Once done, you should see C:\ProgramData\UpSlide on the Windows Security | Virus & Threat Protection exclusion list
