With our Special Charts feature, you can easily create Waterfalls, Stacked Waterfalls, and Marimekko charts in one click. You can also add a CAGR arrow to a chart after it has been created.
Create Waterfall and Stacked Waterfall charts
A Waterfall chart (or Bridge) is an intuitive tool to visualize the cumulative effect of sequentially introduced positive or negative values.
To create a Waterfall chart, simply:
- Select the range of data
- Click the Charts drop-down in the UpSlide ribbon
- Click Waterfall (or press CTRL+Shift+B)
- If you update the data, the waterfall chart will update directly. If you insert or delete data, you will have to reassign the source by selecting the chart, clicking the Charts drop-down, and clicking Select Source Data
To create a Stacked Waterfall chart, repeat the steps above, but click Stacked Waterfall in the Charts drop-down.
Organizing your source data
In the example below, the labels and data are organized in columns. UpSlide can also generate a Waterfall if your data is organized horizontally. For Stacked Waterfall charts, all data in the same row must be of the same sign.
The first and last rows of the source table are always treated as results (not effects). If your data contains one or more intermediary results, UpSlide will automatically detect it and use the appropriate column to represent it in the Waterfall. In this example, EBITDA 2008, EBITDA 2009, and EBITDA 2010 are all treated as intermediary values.
Create Marimekko charts
Marimekko charts are 100%, stacked column charts where the bar width reflects an additional variable.
To create this kind of chart, we recommend using the Examples button in the Charts drop-down. With this feature, you can preview different chart types and insert sample data into a new sheet.
After adding an example Marimekko chart, you can add rows or columns of data in the sample if you want more values for your variables. UpSlide also proposes a variant, the S-curve, which differs from the standard Marimekko chart because of the absence of data normalization, meaning data is no longer presented as a percentage.
Add a CAGR arrow to existing charts
A CAGR arrow can be used to display the compound annual growth rate between the first and last points of the selected chart.
To display a CAGR Arrow:
- Select your chart
- Open the Charts drop-down
- Click CAGR Arrow
For stacked and standard Waterfalls, the number of years is automatically adjusted to the number of 'pillars'.
When you update the chart source data, the CAGR is not automatically updated. To do so, you can either reinsert the CAGR on the chart, or click the Update Charts button. If no chart is selected, this button will also update all the CAGR boxes found in the workbook.
Insert and position data labels
Found in the Charts drop-down, our Labels feature speeds up the process of labeling data on charts. By using it, you will be able to insert, change and move all of your data labels in a few seconds.
Using the Data Label Editor, you can:
- Modify data labels points-wise or series-wise
- Link data labels to the content of a table (or a cell when dealing with a single point)
- Move your labels using native Excel options or change their position by a given increment
