This article will guide you through setting up your template's reminders. If you're not familiar with UpSlide's PowerPoint automation, you might want to look at our Getting started article.
Reminders are placeholders used on slides to display navigation information to let the reader know where they are in the presentation. The placement, font, and information displayed are customizable to show sections' or subsections' titles and numbers.
Create a shape in the automation layout
In the Slide Master, select the fourth slide in the second section. It should be the Reminder shape Storage Layout.
If you delete the grey box that covers it and open the Selection pane, you'll see there's nothing on this slide. Insert a shape and customize it until the display fits your expectations.
Insert the text variable
For the reminder to display the correct information, you need to insert the right variable in the shape you just created.
In the UpSlide ribbon, go to the References section and click Options, then Reminders. Here, you can browse the dropdown menu next to Insert Text Variable to decide which information to display in your shape. Below are the options:
Text Variable | Definition |
<%SectionName%> | Section name |
<%SubSectionName%> | Subsection name |
<%SectionNumber%> | Section number for numbered section and appendix |
<%SubSectionNumber%> | Subsection number |
<%SubSecNumElseSecNum% | If the slide is in a subsection, show subsection number, otherwise show section number |
<%SubSecNameElseSecName%> | If the slide is in a subsection, show subsection name, otherwise show section name |
<%SpaceIfSecNum%> | Display a space if the section is numbered |
<%DotIfSecNum%> | Display a dot if the section is numbered |
<%SpaceIfSubSecNum%> | Display a space if the subsection is numbered |
<%DotIfSubSecNum%> | Display a dot if the subsection is numbered |
<%SpaceIfSubSecOrSecNum%> | Display a dash if the slide is in a subsection |
<%DotIfSubSecOrSecNum%> | Display a space if the slide is in a subsection |
<%TiretIfInSubSec%> | Display a dash if the slide is in a subsection |
<%SpaceIfInSubSec%> | Display a space if the slide is in a subsection |
Once you've chosen which information to display, select the shape in your automation layout, select the text variable in the Options pane and click Insert.
If your template contains sections and subsections and you would like your reminder to display the current divider's number, followed by a dot, a space, and then its name, the shape will contain a text like this:
- <%SUBSECNUMELSESECNUM%><%DOTIFSUBSECORSECNUM%><%SPACEIFSUBSECORSECNUM%><%SUBSECNAMEELSESECNAME%>
Reminders exclusion
There are slides in which you won't want your reminders to display. They can be the introduction slide, the agenda, end slide, facing page slide, etc.
To prevent the reminders from displaying in those slides, select the layouts to exclude using the dropdown menu.
Breadcrumbs
The reminders show information about the current section or subsection, while the Breadcrumbs display the current position with regard to the overall presentation.
